Celebrating General John Ashcroft’s 20th Anniversary at Regent University
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (September 29, 2025) – On September 22, 2025, Regent University honored former Attorney General John D. Ashcroft for 20 years of faithful service as a Distinguished Professor of Law and Government.
Prior to his time at Regent University, General Ashcroft enjoyed an illustrious career as a public servant, beginning as Missouri Auditor in 1973. He was later elected to serve two terms as the state’s Attorney General, followed by eight years as Governor of Missouri before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994. He was then nominated by George W. Bush to serve as U.S. Attorney General from 2001 to 2005, after which he began teaching at Regent University School of Law.
“I consider it to be among the highest privileges I’ve enjoyed in my life to have an opportunity to speak into the lives of the next generation,” said General Ashcroft upon reflection of his time at Regent University. “The transmission of values from one generation to the next is the single most important duty of a culture. This institution is very much involved in the transmission of the right values.”
In commemoration of 20 years of faithful service as Distinguished Professor of Law and Government, Regent University established the John D. Ashcroft Scholarship to be awarded to students who evidence love for God, commitment to public service, and moral fortitude.
“It has been challenging to identify an object that represents the extent of our gratitude to Mr. Ashcroft for investing in our community and in transmitting values to the men and women he has taught,” said Dr. William L. Hathaway, Regent University Provost. “Regent and the American Center for Law and Justice have come together to establish the John D. Ashcroft Scholarship with the goal of cultivating students who will represent future generations of principled leaders in law and government.”
Through his many years in public service and education, General Ashcroft has continued to invest significantly in Regent University’s God-given mission of cultivating Christian leaders to change the world.
