Regent’s Bachelor of Education in Secondary History & Social Science can equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to seek licensure and teach grades 6-12. You can prepare to teach at the middle or high school level while you gain real-world field experience. You can also be equipped in history, geography, civics, and economics, as defined by the Virginia History and Social Science Standards of Learning. Presented from a Christian worldview, courses are taught on campus by award-winning faculty in Virginia Beach.

Teach in the Commonwealth of Virginia through this licensure track. The B.Ed. is offered as an on-campus program. Due to federal regulations regarding professional licensure, students must take all on-campus coursework in their first semester of the B.Ed. program. After their first semester, students may enroll in a blend of on-campus and online coursework, as offered.

Licensure FAQs

Q: Who regulates and issues teaching licenses?

A: Each state’s department of education maintains and regulates teaching certification/licensure.

Q: Can I complete this program and apply for licensure in my home state?

A: Regent University’s B.Ed. programs are designed for on-campus completion and lead to teacher licensure in Virginia. Graduates of our licensure-leading B.Ed. programs can become licensed as teachers in Virginia and then transfer their license (through reciprocity) to other states.

Other states vary in their requirements. Some states require teaching experience before transferring a license, and some states require none at all. Moreover, some states may still maintain certain testing requirements, while others will waive exams if already taken in Virginia. Some states require only an out-of-state educator preparation program (also known as an EPP) to initiate the licensing process.

These are all considerations to make when applying to a B.Ed. program at Regent University. We recommend that you research the department of education’s website for the state(s) you intend to teach in and contact them if necessary to determine if our program is suitable for your teaching career goals.

Q: Can I complete my practicum and field experience/student teaching in my home state?

A: Regent University’s B.Ed. programs are on-campus, and our faculty must oversee the practicum and field experience to maintain adherence to VDOE guidelines. Therefore, all B.Ed. students will complete their practicum and field experience with our local partnering schools in Virginia.

A: The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) is a professional organization that supports teacher licensure and reciprocity with all 50 states (plus DC) as members.

GOVT 240	American Government & Politics I	3	Provides an analysis of the founding of the United States through an investigation of the important philosophical, constitutional, and political questions surrounding the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, the Constitutional Convention, and the creation and development of the U.S. Constitution. Attention is given to federalism, and the Constitutional institutions of the Presidency, Congress, and the Supreme Court.
HIST 350	History of Virginia	3	Cultural, political, and economic history of the Commonwealth and its role in the nation to the present. Prerequisite: Any one HIST 200-level course.
UED 401	Secondary Curriculum & Assessment Fundamentals	3	Attention to special and alternative education to federal, state and local guidelines; and to the influence of educational philosophies on programs and instruction in the secondary setting. Prerequisite: Admission to the teacher preparation program.
UED 487	Teaching History & Social Science in Secondary Education	2	Current practices in teaching History and Social Science in secondary education. Emphasis is on current issues, research literature, and the role of technology in History and Social Science. Teachers will also explore how to teach History and Social Science to diverse learners. Taken with UED 480A.
UED 488	Advanced Methods of Teaching History & Social Science in Secondary Education	2	Current practices in teaching History and Social Sciences in secondary education. Emphasis is on the use of best practices with emphasis given to History and Social Science discussions, writing across the curriculum, ability to analyze data to improve student performance, the relationship among assessment, instruction, and monitoring student progress, the use of media and computers, and methods of improving communication between schools and families. Prerequisite UED 487. Taken with UED 480B.

Upon submitting your application, you will receive an email requesting authorization for Regent University to obtain your official transcripts from your U.S. degree-granting institution. International transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES, AACRAO or NAFSA approved agency.

Step 3: Submit Your Government-Issued ID

To ensure academic integrity, Regent University requires a copy of a government-issued ID. Please submit a scanned copy or photograph of it to regent.edu/items.

Step 4: Submit Your FAFSA
